How the BidStaff Extension Works on Upwork, From Opening a Job Page to a Tracked Proposal, Explained

What the BidStaff extension reads, what the job check shows, how proposals are written and how every apply lands in Tracking, step by step.

The BidStaff extension turns the Upwork job page into your proposal desk. You open a job, click the icon and the panel reads the page. You can then check the job, write a proposal in your own tone and save the application to your tracking sheet. You always copy and submit the proposal on Upwork yourself.

This article follows one job from start to finish. It explains what the panel reads, what each button does, what it costs in credits and what the extension never does. If you like to know how a tool treats your data before you use it, read the last sections first.

Quick answer

Open a job and click the BidStaff icon. The panel reads the job title, description, budget, connects and screening questions.

  • Step 1 (optional): Check job uses 1 job-check credit. It shows your match score and a client result.
  • Step 2: Write proposal uses 1 proposal credit. It writes the proposal and screening answers in your tone and saves the apply to Tracking.
  • You copy the proposal and submit it on Upwork yourself.

What does the BidStaff extension read on a job page?

When you open the panel on a job, BidStaff reads the text already on your screen. That includes:

  • the job title and the full description
  • the budget and type (fixed or hourly)
  • the connects needed
  • any screening questions
  • the numbers in the client box

Nothing is clicked or changed on the page. Nothing is read in the background. If you open a job from the feed preview and something is missing, open the full job page and press Re-read page.

Why does the full page work better than the preview?

The preview shows only part of the job. The full page carries the whole description, the screening questions and the client box. A complete read gives a better match score and a better draft.

How does it stop two bidders applying to the same job?

If anyone on your team already wrote a proposal for the same job, you see a warning. It names the profile and the person. So two bidders do not apply twice, which wastes Connects and can look odd to a client.

This matters most for agencies with several profiles. See how to run an agency team with the extension for the full team setup.

What does the job check show?

The check is optional. Pick the Upwork profile you want to apply from and press Check job. It uses 1 job-check credit. You get three things.

  • A match score from 0 to 10 with one line on why. It compares the skills, tools and deliverables in the job with that profile’s expertise and samples.
  • A client result: good client, maybe, or not a good client. The result follows the standard your agency admin set.
  • The client numbers side by side: rating, hire rate, total spent, hires, average paid per hire and payment status.

To learn how to read those numbers, see how to check an Upwork client before you apply. If you already know the job fits, skip the check and go straight to writing.

When should you skip the check?

Skip it for jobs that are an obvious fit from a client you know. Run it when the job is unclear or the client is new to you. That way your job-check credits go where they help most.

How does the BidStaff extension write the proposal?

The screening questions and connects are filled in from the job. Then you set a few options and press Write proposal.

  1. Choose a length.
  2. Add a note for the writer if you like, for example “mention our Apollo setup”.
  3. Press Write proposal. It uses 1 proposal credit.
  4. Read the draft and edit anything you want.
  5. Press Copy proposal, paste it into Upwork and submit it yourself.

BidStaff writes in the tone of your winning proposals. It attaches the samples that fit and answers each screening question separately. Need a different angle? Rewrite uses one more credit.

Why does your library matter here?

The draft is only as good as the examples behind it. Winning proposals teach the tone. Samples supply the proof. Read how to add profiles, samples and winning proposals automatically to fill your library fast.

For help with the writing side, see how to write Upwork proposals in your own tone.

What happens in Tracking?

Every proposal you write is saved to your Tracking sheet as applied. Each row holds the job link, the profile, connects, budget and a short client summary.

Later you only mark replies and wins. Your reports and weekly email count them automatically.

This replaces the spreadsheet most freelancers keep by hand. It also gives you a clean record of why you applied. Over time you can see which profile and which kind of job bring replies.

What does each action cost?

Action Cost What you get
Open the panel and read the job No credit use is listed Job details loaded in the panel
Check job 1 job-check credit Match score, client result, client numbers
Write proposal 1 proposal credit Proposal and screening answers, saved to Tracking
Rewrite 1 more credit A new version with a different angle
Import profiles and winning proposals Free Library entries and sample links

For plan details and what each plan includes, see pricing. Connects are an Upwork cost and are separate from BidStaff credits. To keep an eye on them, read how to track what Upwork really costs you.

What does the extension never do?

  • It never submits, applies, clicks or sends messages on Upwork.
  • It never asks for your Upwork password. You log in with your BidStaff account.
  • It only reads the page you have open, when you use the panel.

These limits are deliberate. Upwork is your account and your reputation. You stay in control of what you send.

How does this compare with doing it by hand?

Stage By hand With the BidStaff extension
Read the job Copy text into notes or another tool The panel reads the open page
Judge the fit Compare skills in your head Match score with a one-line reason
Judge the client Scan the box and calculate Numbers side by side with a verdict
Write the proposal Blank page or an old draft Draft in your tone with fitting samples
Record the apply Update a sheet later Saved to Tracking at once
Avoid double apply Ask in team chat Warning shown in the panel

What tips get better results?

  • Open the full job page. Do not rely on the preview.
  • Choose the right profile. The match score depends on it.
  • Add a short note for the writer when you have a detail the job post does not show.
  • Read the draft out loud. Change anything you would not say to a client.
  • Mark replies and wins. Tracking works best when the outcomes are recorded.
